New year. New resolutions.

But realistically, those never really last. Being inspired by a friend who faithfullyblogged every Monday during his time in Uganda, I made the resolution that Iwould do the same and set a night. Obviously I have failed at that because this is my first post since thenew year started. Maybe I can aim foronce a month?

Something that I am continually reminded of is that life islife anywhere. No matter where you areor how adventuresome your life seems from the outside, as humans we always finda norm. Normal life in Africa might bepackaged in a different color and have different daily dramas (like no powerfor day #9 and no concrete signs of it returning any time soon), but I stillhave found a “normal life” routine here in Uganda. Actually I am really grateful for that. I am grateful for the reminder that mygreatest desire is for the Lord and He is everywhere that I am and that myneeds are met because He is my provider. I am grateful for friends from all over the world and “new normals” likesleeping under a mosquito net every night.

I am also continually grateful that the Lord has chosen touse me, despite myself, to love the children of Lulwanda Children’s Home. I amgrateful that He has carried me through difficult times and humbled me when Istart thinking (and acting) too highly of myself. I am grateful for lessons re-learned indeeper ways and that it is the Lord’s kindness that leads me to repentance.

So, 2012 has started with a refreshing glimpse of some of myweaknesses: that my loving Father might break me down of myself that I can bemore like Him. The year has started withphysical discomfort of serious heat and sketchy power to remind me that I havethe choice of how I will respond in all situations. And 2012 has started with the departure ofmany fun friends whose time in Uganda has come to an end to keep me close toHim as the only promised constant in my life.

I am reading the book, Humility by Andrew Murray. It is definitely humbling. I am far from being like Jesus. I am grateful for the Holy Spirit whoconvicts me of my pride and self-centeredness but also reminds me that there isNO condemnation for those who are in Christ. Please pray with me that I would daily count others as better thanmyself, not jump to conclusions or assumptions based on my opinions, and that Iwould seek to be a servant rather than seeking how to be served. Pray that my words would be seasoned withencouragement and my actions would be ones of unconditional love. Less of me and more of you, Jesus. But better yet, none of me and all of youJesus.

For my 29th birthday I invited my closest friends to join me for a very fun night of playing Bunco. This birthday was one of my favorites because I was able to have both my Ugandan and Mzungu friends together.

This has been our group for the past few months. Every Tuesday is game night, likely with a heated game of Settlers of Catan. Sadly, two of these three lovely gentlemen have already returned to their country and the third one has about 2 weeks until he also departs. Sam, Paul, and Dan- thank you for such a fun season of friendship. You are (and will be) missed

Goat Roasting...

Many little eyes, 338 to be exact, stare intently following the sound of the goats' screams. The Headmaster presents the head boy and head girl each with a big goat with a string tied to its foot like a leash. The excitement grows as the uncles lead the goats to the side of the school. Definite squeals of thrill and disgust as the children have closely huddled around to see the goats being slaughtered and skinned.

“Teacha look!! The goat still has milk.”- My Western thought: “Really?!? Stop milking the dead goat. That is disgusting!!”

What is happening at LCH?!?

As a reward to celebrate the children’s great efforts and success at music competition in July, the school organized to have a goat roasting celebration.

I won’t lie… I had a moment where I laughed to myself and thought, “Only in Africa would this be normal (and acceptable) fun.” And fun it was. The kids were so happy as they carried their big chunks of goat meat, hanging by a thin metal wire, to the fire to roast.

As they huddle in three groups over the small fires we had created there were three main methods to the madness. Some children were patient with the process, keeping their meat on the wire grill until it reached the perfect tenderness. Some children didn’t feel like they had the proper angle, so they devised ways of “hanging” their meat over the fire by tying banana leaves to the skewer and lowering the meat down to the middle of the fire where the patient roasters could not reach. And then there were the others who were salivating too much from the thought of this delicious treat and decided to speed up the process by shoving the meat directly into the fire. Whatever the method, the result was satisfying.

Ugh!! UMEME!

“Ugh!--- UMEME!!” I find myself saying this phrase a lot recently, well at least in my head. UMEME is the local word for power or electricity. And for the last month we have had power twenty four hours on, twenty four hours off- at best. Lame! They call this load shedding.

There are a variety of theories as to why there has been such an increase in power cuts. 1) Uganda, as a country, has an outstanding debt to the power company, which they are unable to pay because the current president used all the allocated money for paying the bill on his presidential campaign at the beginning of the year. 2) There were 3 companies producing power at the Nile river and because of the economic crisis, two went bankrupt. Therefore, there is now only one company producing power for the whole country- in which it is unable to produce enough. 3) Uganda is selling the power to neighboring countries. I don’t even know if this is possible. But none the less, candle light dinners are now a common occurrence and not so romantic :)

So, there a few key things I have learned due to the load shedding. 1) On the nights that you do have power, plug in everything with a rechargeable battery. 2) Oil lamps are more economic than candles. 3) Make sure you check that the light switches are off, otherwise you will get a bright surprise when power returns as you are sleeping. 4) “Missionary midnight” = 9pm now makes sense to me. 5) I am grateful to have power AT LEAST sometimes.

There are things that are so basic that we often take for granted. Let’s take sugar. Shockingly, the cost of sugar has increased from 2300 shillings/kg about four months ago to 6000 shillings/kg. In the past month, it has not been uncommon to see sugar increase by 1000 shillings in a day.

To gain a little perspective, the current exchange rate is about $1=2600 shillings. And there are about 4 cups of sugar in a kg. So, it is about $2.30 for 4 cups of sugar.

So, for a little more perspective, you can buy one kilogram of sugar OR you can buy:

- 6 giant avocados

- ½ kg of beef fillet

- 6 sodas to enjoy with your friends

- 30 tomatoes

- Two bunches of bananas

- Or Have a skirt altered and two small curtains made

I was talking to my Granny the other day and told her that we have now gone on sugar rationing and have eliminated most baking (and in a house of two girls that love to bake, this is saying a lot).

In a society that sees sugar as a necessity for their tea (often times using up to 3 heaping tablespoons), the increase in sugar prices is having a big impact on my Ugandan friends. And though I have made this out to be a little light-hearted, the reality is that the cost of EVERYTHING has increased significantly, whereas the wages of Ugandans has not moved to account for the increased cost of living. This is putting many people in difficult situations to even meet basic needs like food, rent, and school fees.

Please pray for Uganda. Pray that prices come down. Pray that employers are fair and kind in regard to their employees’ salaries. Pray for God to provide for the growing number of people who seem to have more expenses than they do income. The Lord is our Shepherd, we shall not want.

"You are lost."

Often times, when you meet a Ugandan you haven't seen in awhile, they will tell you, "You are lost." I have come to understand this as merely an extension of their typical greetings. My response of choice is either, "Yes, somehow." or "No, I have always known where I was." So, I do recognize that I have been "lost" from my blog for some time. But thank your for your faithfulness to continue checking and reading.

I have been challenged recently by the thought, “Wherever you are, be all there.” And I suppose this would also be my attempt to explain my blogging absence. After a wonderful, but very busy summer, the children then were released for second term holiday (basically all of August).

This is my favorite time of the year. With all my little friends back home, not occupied with the rigorous school schedule, I had plenty of activities and fun that I wanted to have with them. So, abandoning the world of computer, internet, emails, and blogging, I spent August playing with legos, snuggling little ones, taking groups out to visit a babies home, swimming with P5 and doing arts and crafts. Evening hours would have been a great time to catch up, but power is only on every other night- if that.

So, all that to say, I have been intentional to “be all there” for the children while at LCH and with my friends, playing games and sharing time together in the evenings.

The biggest news to share is that I have “shifted” houses. I am living in the same neighborhood with my closest friend here, Tiffany. In the month that I have lived in my new house, it has already been a great blessing. There is a beautiful vegetable garden in the back, along with a little covered patio to sit on and take evening tea. Also loving to cook and host people, I am excited to see who the Lord brings our way to show the love of Christ.

And advance warning that this might be longer than normal because it has been awhile since my last post. But hopefully you will enjoy hearing stories and seeing what God is doing at LCH.

ALSO- - a prayer request: Pray for expedited approval of my work permit renewal. It has already been turned into the immigration office for a month, but things move quite slow here. It expires on Aug. 11 and if not approved in time then I have to spend extra money, effort, and trips to Kampala to apply for a special pass until the renewal is approved.

Of course summer is our busiest season. But I praise God that this summer has been one of the greatest in the number and type of visitors that we have been able to host at LCH. During June, two individuals came, which was so fun for me to have girls my age to show the ropes of Mbale and host slumber parties at my home :) Also, a new friend, Melanie May, has moved to Mbale and is living in my old "apartment" at Mama and Pastor's house. She will be here for at least 2 years, so I am excited to see how God will grow our friendship.

Sarah Hurst is finishing up her final week in Uganda and has done a great work giving feedback and helping our LCH students prepare for the Music Competition that will be held this Friday. Our kids sound awesome and we are praying for their success and to pass on to the next level.

Sarah has also been a huge blessing in helping me to accomplish some of the big tasks that were on my plate. She has been a blessing to LCH and to me personally.

Amy Watley is a friend I know from TbarM and a teacher in Lubbock, Texas. She spent about a month at LCH, helping out in the P3 classroom, organizing the supply closet, and teaching the teachers how to use the various classroom manipulatives that God has provided for us. Her joyful attitude and servant's heart made her a huge highlight of the summer.

Really, I have had a blast with Sarah and Amy. We have laughed together so many times. They are sweet friends to me and God allowed us to do many unique things together during their visit, such as...

Visiting Namatala, a slum in Mbale, where many people from Northern Uganda fled to during war times in hopes of finding better opportunity. Unfortunately, they did not find that to be fully true and now live in this village, in their little mud huts, with little opportunity to proper medical care or education. Thankfully, God's grace has stretched to 40 of these young children to provide school fees and supplemental food through a ministry called I Choose You.

did the work of priming the wall before a team came out to paint a new mural.

Girls weekend to the Nile River. We stayed at a little guest house that is truly one of God's treasures and took an afternoon trip to the headwaters of the River Nile. They say this is the actual point of the source of the river and where it begins its 1300 mile journey up to Egypt.

We also traveled with a team to Sipi falls, where we hiked under and then to the top of the falls.

In preparing for one of our teams to visit, the three of us visited St. Kizito's Baby's home and were able to spend some time playing with these sweet ones. I love that LCH has partnered with St. Kizito's and three of our new children, who had outgrown the accepted age of St. Kizito's, are now part of Lulwanda's family.

Of course we have spent most of our days at LCH doing various activities.

How can you not love these faces?! Oh Jesus, thank you that you have and continue to restore hope at LCH for 110 precious kids. These are some of our newest babies! (Shameless plug- most of our new girls are needing sponsors.

It is the season for maize. You can find many vendors on the street selling either boiled or roasted maize. One evening, being very Ugandan, Amy and I jumped onto a piki (motorbike taxi) and rode to town to buy maize and mango juice and proceeded to the local hangout- a wall outside of one of the government buildings- to people watch and enjoy our snack. We even made two new friends :)

Outside of visitors to LCH, there are many teams who come to Mbale to do church plants under the ministry of Pastor Morris. We had the privilege to join one of the teams and head out to the field or hut-to-hut evangelism and a crusade that followed.

I have also been able to celebrate 3 birthdays in the last 2 months of old and new friends. Jerad, my friend and co-worker at LCH had his 24th birthday. We had a great celebration, complete with the a Kenyan birthday tradition of pouring water on the birthday person. Jerad had no idea what was coming!!

And who said that "firework sparklers" were only and outside toy for the 4th of July?! Here, a birthday party is not complete without the sparkler candles.

We also have had the privilage of having the Perkins family join us for a few days- doing various activities from I.T. to teaching to sponsor photos. And God has again blessed us by the return of our dear friends from MDPC (in Houston area) that beautified our campus with new murals, a team of teachers from Wimberly and Monahans area who held a teacher's workshop for over 40 local teachers, and the Global Journey team, that willingly served in various areas, from painting, to reading, to playing with the kiddos. So, many things have been happening in the past two months that it might be better to show you in pictures so you get the full effect of God's rich blessings to us at LCH.

I love to see the hearts of the teams that come because their love and generosity always extend beyond the children and staff at Lulwanda.

MDPC visited a recently established children's home called, My Father's House and brought bags of rice, posho, beans, and sugar, in addition to many toys and balls for the children there.

One of my sweetest moments of the summer was meeting the beautiful girl below, Emily. She first caught my eye because of her little crutches sitting beside her. After asking about her, I found out she is 10 years old, and in baby class. Her teacher says she is able to learn but just doesn't try. I have seen this before with some of our LCH children that are big in size and age, but behind in education. They get discouraged and give up. On top of that, she is basically immobile on her own capabilities. When the team presented their gifts, it included a little tricycle. The director quickly suggested that this be for Emily. But as we put her on, we realized that because of the immobility of her legs and that there was not a foot rest, we didn't think this would work for her. But God works in interesting ways. After pushing her around the room a couple times, holding her legs up so that they wouldn't drag behind, I stopped Emily in the middle of the room. After a few minutes, I was something wonderful. She was using her hands to move her legs and feet forward, one at a time, and then scooting her body to excel slightly forward. I watched her do it a second time and realized she was actually moving. So, I went over and helped encourage her to continue. Sure enough, she moved inch by inch around the room. Oh, tears filled my eyes seeing this little girl be freely mobile for the first time in her life and seeing a sense of pride and self worth shine forth in a smile that was before vacant.

Emily touched my heart and I invited her to Lulwanda to meet my friend, Betty, who uses a cane to help walk around. I hope Betty can be a great source of encouragement to Emily- that a disability does not have to hinder your life and especially education. Sweet Emily has a bright future, in Jesus' name!

In the afternoons, the Thrasher team led the girls in different crafty activities like sewing bags and baking yummy treats. While the boys carved, painted, and put together little wooden cars. At the end of the week we had a pinewood derby race to see whose car was the fastest and went the farthest. There was even a crowd of children from the village there to see the excitement.

Painting, painting, painting. Whether a fresh coat of paint to spruce up the walls or beautiful murals to add character to the dorms and main hall, Lulwanda has a new look and it is WONDERFUL. We are so grateful to the Global Journey team for serving us in a less glamorous way by sprucing up our walls and to MDPC for the incredibly beautiful mural on the outside kitchen and the names of God and who God calls us in the dormitories and main hall. Thank you for beautifying our home!!

Thank you a million times to all our visitors that have been a rich blessing to us at Lulwanda Children's Home. I am excited to host our last team of the summer next week. The team is extra special because my step-mom, Janece, is coming with a small group from East Lake Fellowship and it will be everyone's first time to Africa, except for Janece.

Street smart...

This summer season is so fun. I have been hosting two wonderful volunteers at LCH and we have been women on the move doing everything from painting half a building blue to hut-to-hut evangelism. So, I have not had much time to sit down and blog. But I do have a guest blog for you from one of my friends, Valerie Snyder, who recently moved to Mbale to work with another mission group. Hope you enjoy.

Laughter instead of tears

As I watched Natalie chase  several street boys away from her car with an umbrella I couldn’t stop  from laughing.  She was screaming about the fact that she “JUST” washed  her car, the car that they were all hanging and kissing on. She had  warned them to get away or she would "beat" them, apparently they didn’t  take her seriously. I must say, neither did I for that matter. This was  until she whipped herself out of her broken-down car and hurled herself  at the disrespectful boys who were hollering at us….

You see, the night started with a group of us wanting to share a meal  with Miss Emily Daw before she headed back to the States. Our plan was  to go out and eat at Emily’s favorite Indian restaurant.  As four of us  sat at the bottom of a hill, on our way to town, we listened to  Natalie’s car rumble as if it wasn’t getting sufficient amounts of gas.  We were stuck. We couldn’t move forward, we didn’t know what to do…..

Revving the engine seemed to help.  So we brought the RPM’s up and  were able to speed our way up the hill to the main road.  Laughing the  entire way as we speedily zipped over the potholes, scaring everyone  else on the road…..

After stopping for gas we eventually got to the restaurant, ate and  had great conversations. As we were leaving, hoping the car would make  it home we had no idea the night that was to come. 

Oh, the car was able to start alright, however we weren’t able to  move even a centimeter before we stalled out. This is when the street  boys started collecting around the car. The growing amount of street  boys begging for money and making comments was not what broke  Natalie. The frustration and worry of her car not working, the gradual  increase of rudeness by the boys were only minor frustrations.  However,  once the boys started kissing on the windows, oh yes, that was what  eventually broke Natalie. She was screaming at the boys to get off her  car, she had just washed it!  She continued to warn them, if they did  not leave her car alone she would beat them. The four of us just started  laughing. We did not believe Natalie’s threats, because that’s just  what we thought they were, threats. 

Much to our disbelief however, Natalie was not bluffing. She  catapulted out of her car, umbrella in hand, running after the street  boys trying to get them away from her newly washed car. The rest of us  left in the car could not help but to burst out  in uncontrollable laughter.  While Natalie dealt with the annoying  street kids we were all laughing about the situation. 

Even as we were attached to our friend’s truck, being pulled by a tow-strap around Mbale town, we couldn’t stop from laughing.
Oh what a night.

It was an interesting and entertaining night. To defend myself, the reason that I was concerned about my newly washed car was because early the next morning I was participating in a wedding of a Ugandan friend and my car needed to look "smart" but I knew I would not have time to have it washed again before the wedding. And the situation with the street boys was portrayed by a "newby" in Mbale and not as grave as it sounded.

And, my car is now very fine. Our mechanic friend replaced the plugs and my car was delivered to my house before I even had time to call and check on it.

I realize that there are many things things that happen within a day that I count as normal, but would be quite unusual to the average person. So, I hope I can start capturing some of those moments for you.

Last weekend was one of the first that I didn't have a wedding to attend or a schedule to keep. So nice. I slept in without being woken by the sounds of roosters crowing. I had plans to try a new recipie for "mango crumble" so I started peeling the mangoes we had in the kitchen. But, I found that I didn't have enough. Luckily, we have two big beautiful mango trees in our backyard.

I went outside and asked our guard if he could help me knock down some from the tree, expecting him to take the long pole to reach them. Instead, he took off his shoes and started climbing. The top of the tree is where the sweetest ones are anyways, right? So, wanting to pull my weight in unexpected mango picking adventure, I strategically placed myself below him to be in the proper place to catch each mango that he threw down. Instead of the four I requested, I ended up with about a dozen. And the mango crumble was delicious!!

Later that afternoon, the guard comes to our door to see if I needed any milk because the Milk Man was outside, delivering milk on his bicycle.

And although buying pasteurized milk from the supermarket is convenient, there is something organic about having to boil your milk after collecting it from the milk man. But you can't leave the milk unattended, unless you want a big mess.

The phrase, "There is no use crying over spilled milk" has a whole new meaning.

Make new friends, but keep the old...

It is definitely a season of changes. Dry season starting to become rainy season. New sisters added to LCH. School holiday schedule. S1 coming home for holiday. Preparing for summer visitors. And housemates'/friends' time of ministry in Uganda coming to an end.

Below are my lovely housemates. Sadly, two of them have already returned to America and the other departs early June. And not just for a break, but for good. When I arrived in March, at my first dinner back with my friends, I asked who was leaving and when. Sadly, the days continue to come and many of my close missionary friends are moving on to the next season of their life.

But, although many are going, there are new people coming and new opportunities to create friendships with others whom I have not known so well.

I am also trying to make every moment count with those who are going. This is Emily and I preparing to run the "Eastern Corporate Mini Marathon" (really equaling a 10k). Though being typical of African time and starting and hour and a half late, we successfully finished the race (in the blazing equatorial sun).

Did I mention that Emily had just come back from hiking Mt. Kenya (the second tallest mountain in Africa) two days before the race?! She is awesome!

And you never know what to expect here. After most people had finished the race, they gathered us into a circle and had us do a mini aerobics class. Please be serious! We just ran 6.2 miles. Now is NOT the time for aerobics! Ha! (That is me in the background)

So, I know that although it is sad to say bye to some beloved friends I have made, God is faithful to know my needs. Just as He brought good friends at the right time, He will bring more again.

Look what the Lord has done!

Four years ago today I arrived in a foreign land,

following a childhood dream that had grown into a confirmed call of obedience to the Lord.

Little did I know that I would now call Uganda home.

When I arrived on May 2, 2007 for a three month internship, there were 45 children who shared one dormitory (boys on one side, girls on the other), 16 staff, 2 house mothers, school was happening in the main hall, and children were rushed into town for any medical problem.

Now there are 110 children sleeping in three beautiful housing quarters, over 20 staff, 4 house mothers, a fully registared school that educated 170 children last term, and a clinic on site to serve the medical needs of the LCH children and staff.

Praise the Lord for what He has done! Praise Him for the ways that He has used me at LCH! Praise Him for the ways He has changed me through the people of Uganda! My God is able! He is my Provider! He is my Keeper! He fights for me! The light always overcomes the darkness! He is the restorer of hope! He is Hope itself! He is my Father and my friend!

He loves me with an everlasting love!

And His heart is for orphans and widows. He sees each child. He hears their cries. He is the Giver of every good and perfect gift. He is mighty to save! My God is able! He is Hope itself!

African Aerobics

So, I haven't done this before. I like to try to tell my own stories, but sometimes others just tell them better (well usually that sometimes is always for me, but I try). SO, this is my first guest blog- written by my housemate, Elise.

When you spend four months in Uganda, you are presented with some interesting opportunities. For me, one of the most exciting to date was African aerobics class.

For those who have never opted to participate in an aerobics class in the states, allow me to take a minute to fill you in. First off, the class will probably consist of entirely females. The class will last an hour, consist of a ten minute warm up period, a half-hour work out consisting of either a floor routine, step aerobics, or a combination of the two, followed by mat work or weights, and finally conclude with a ten minute cool down. The entire class will be set to upbeat remixes of semi-current pop songs, and your instructor will typically take great care in calling out the upcoming moves. That’s the typical American aerobics experience.

Hop on a plane, jet across the Atlantic, and make your way to Mt. Elgon Hotel’s African version of aerobics, Mondays through Thursdays starting at 6:30 PM. While your plane ticket may cost 2,500 US dollars, you’ll only pay 5,000 Ugandan shillings for this incredibly rigorous workout. (That’s less than 2.50 US dollars.) When you enter the thatched-roof dining room, be prepared to start right away, because there is no warm-up included in this program. As you start a step-touch routine, you’ll notice that the number of men in the room greatly outnumber the women. You’ll also notice that the music being played is Christian worship and praise songs sung in English, and the tempo is somewhere between 20 and 40 beats per minute faster than any workout music used in North America.

Now that you’re starting to work up a sweat doing the step-touch, pay special attention to your instructor. Can you figure out what he’s saying? Neither can I. You will hear him yell out a series of numbers in English that may or may not have any meaning. You will also hear him say the word, “Loop! Loop!” multiple times, which means he’s going to start doing some ridiculous turning step that will be repeated so many times you’ll want to puke before he decides you should perform the step the same number of times in the opposite direction.

Once you get into the groove of a certain step, you may notice that the power has gone out, meaning you and the fifteen other aerobicizers will be left grape-vining in the dark with no music. Don’t worry, your instructor will yell out for you to continue as he fumbles around in the dark, waiting for the generator to kick on, at which point the lights will come on and the music will resume. Also, do not be alarmed if the instructor gets tired and leaves the room for some fresh air, or to take a phone call. Simply continue doing whatever you were doing. He’ll be back soon!

All in all, I've greatly enjoyed this unique opportunity to experience aerobics abroad. It's a great workout, and I love going with my roommate on Thursday nights! I would definitely recommend Mt. Elgon aerobics to anyone looking to get in shape!

Aerobics is growing as one of the highlights of my week. I have tried to go every Thursday. It makes me smile and laugh, all while getting fit. You can't beat that!

March in a few words/photos...

Well, I hit the ground running. God is so good in all that He is doing at LCH. I just wanted to bring out some highlights that happened in March.

Social Inquiries:
The Lord has seen it the right time to expand LCH and bring hope into the lives of 20 new little girls. Wow!

People often ask me how we get our children... Everything must go through the government. Throughout March, Edward and I have been very busy doing social inquires with the Probation Officers. These are people similar to CPS.

Some of the girls were recommended by pastors of our church plants (bringing awareness to some of the most desperate cases that they had within their churches). Others were recommended by partner ministries. The probation officer visits each home to assess the living conditions, arrangements, education opportunities and general vulnerability of the child. Based on these findings they then either approve or disapprove of the need for institutional care for the child. Papers are then filed with the local magistrate and taken to the courts for the judge to see the child and hand over guardianship.

Many of the girls have lost parents to AIDS. About half of them are total orphans, while the others are partial orphans who are under the care of a sickly mother or passed on to an auntie or grandmother in hopes of better care. Three of the children are coming from a nearby babies orphanage (that our LCH children have visited before).

I know that God has hand selected each of these new children to be at LCH. Now, we are just waiting for the local magistrate to be in office and approve the paperwork. Pray with us for timeliness in this process. We are all so excited to meet our new sisters!

Practice:

The kids have been doing serious practice and training for the sub-county track competition. Each morning I would find them in their field with their teachers, running relays or doing the long jump. One day we even had a neighboring school join us in the field for a friendly competition.

Dentist:

Nurse Pam and Gettu organized for a dentist to come and check the dental health of all of our children.

Later in the afternoon, the dentist held a dental hygiene seminar to tell children and staff about the mouth/teeth, proper brushing and care, and diseases or problems that can come if they don't brush. The children and staff were very receptive and asked many questions to gain further insight.

LCHPS- Community Children:

God is doing great things at our school and many people are hearing about the success our first set of P7 candidates. This year we have about 70 community children enrolled in school with our LCH students. It is fun our children make friends from outside.

The nursery school is filled with new faces of small little children.
Soon, many of our 20 new little girls will join them in class.

God's hand at LCH:

The girls hostel is in its finishing stages. It looks so "smart" and the older girls cannot wait to "shift" (move in)." All of the beds, mattresses, etc have been bought so we are expecting things to be in order by the end of this week.

The Local Management Committee took a "field trip" to the farm land to gain a better perspective on what and where the land is.

Plowing has begun in preparations for the rainy season.

My life:
When I arrived back in Uganda my house had one more person than when I had left it. Elise is my new housemate. But not for much longer, as she is leaving at the beginning of May (her commitment was 4 months). Even so, the four of us have been having a lot of fun together.

One weekend me, Emily, and Elise decided to go hiking half-way up Mt. Wanale. Starting bright and early at 6am, in attempts to stay out of the sun for the whole hike, we climbed the foothills of the mountain for about 45 minutes. Passing through villages and by many houses with little kids shouting, "Mzungu, how are you?"

It is so beautiful up the mountain! Things are so peaceful and so lush. Life is simple.

Once we had reached the half-way point, we climbed up a big boulder to see the view of Mbale town. Slowly some little friends started joining us. This little girl totally showed me up as we were getting off the boulder. While I scooted down using all my limbs to brace me, she simply walked down, no hesitation, with a baby on her back and a knife in her hands. She has had a lot more practice, what can I say?!

Visitation Day

Imagine finishing elementary school and being told by your parents that after the summer holiday you were to pack you belongings and all your bedding because you are being sent to boarding school for your whole high school experience.

If you are anything like me, this might seem like a punishment- like for the bullies at school that need to be sent to boot camp to get straightened out or for the rich Hollywood type. But in Uganda, secondary boarding schools are a cultural norm. Therefore, in keeping with true African style, the oldest 10 children of LCH began boarding schools in Kampala and Mbale in the middle of February.

Last Sunday was the first Visitation Day for our Senior 1 students in Kampala. Having left Mbale very early to make our 4 hour journey to the capital city, we stopped along the way to pick up a picnic lunch of chicken and chips and buy some much craved for goodies like bread and butter, sugar, cookies, and soda.

As we reached the school, there was sea of dark bodies with bright green and red shirts. We met up with our students' main class teacher and he helped us to find them. Relaxing under the mango tree with Auntie Christine, Jarod, Paul, and Fiona, we spotted Sylvia running toward us (below on left). With tears rolling down her cheeks she hugged us. But we were concerned. "Sylvia, why are you crying? Are you sick?" She shook her head but still wouldn't answer. Then I asked her, "Are these tears of sadness or of joy?" She replied joy. So sweet. She was just happy to see us. Slowly the other students found us and it was a sweet reunion.

They shared many stories about the new friends they had made, how life in secondary school is, how their teachers are strict but good, and about their daily schedule and weekend fun. Paul and Fiona also shared about what is happening at LCH Primary School and how how they elected a new head boy and girl for the school.

The girl then showed us their dormitory. It is basically a huge room with multiple triple layer bunk beds. Though they could choose anywhere to sleep, our girls have two bunks right next to each other. (The boys said they are on opposite sides of the dorm.)

It was a wonderful day. Being my first real experience with Visitation Day, I had a lot to learn and it was fun seeing the children take the initiative to show me different things around their school or remind me that I had not yet seen the results of their monthly tests. But now with a little experience under my belt, I am ready for the next "V day".

The students get first term holidays on April 20. Although I am glad they are studying hard, it is weird not having them at LCH. This was the class that I was closest to, seeing as they were the oldest and I can relate to them better, but also because when I first arrived at LCH in 2007 their teacher went for maternity leave and they had no teacher to fill in, so I did. They were in P4 then. Now my babies are growing up :) I think I know a little how parents feel now.

I arrived in Mbale on March 3, grateful that none of my luggage (aka wonderful treasures from America) got lost in transition. I am so glad to be back. And luckily, today was a public holiday so I got to play with the kids all day (instead of them being at school).

But God was so faithful during my time in America. One of my prayers was that He would give me new opportunities to share what He is doing at LCH. And that He did. I was interviewed by a reporter of the newspaper in Midland, Texas. Feel free to click on the article linked below.

God is good, all the time. And all the time, God is good. And that is His nature!

JANUARY: The children enjoyed their long holiday before beginning a new year at school. Uganda was one of the few countries that got to see this solar eclipse.

FEBRUARY: A new school year began. But this year, Lulwanda Children’s Home Primary School received its official national registration and we were able to enroll 30 children from the community. We also had our annual “back to school” football match of Teachers versus kids.

MARCH: LCHPS participated in sub-county and district level track and field competitions. We also rejoiced in the arrival of the container filled with desks and other school supplies.

APRIL: After participation at the local level, two of our students qualified for the Mbale team to represent town at national level. This year nationals were held in Mbale, so many of our student were able to attend and cheer their schoolmates on. In other news, our clinical officer, Pamela, had her introduction ceremony.

And the torrential rains hit Bududa district, causing a massive mudslide and forcing many from their homes. Our LCH children took the initiative to collect some of their clothing to donate to the victims of the mudslide. We took a trip there to hand deliver the items and see the destruction for ourselves.

MAY: This month ended Term 1, where we celebrated with the top students in each class by taking them to Sipi Falls. Also, the P5 class were taken on an outing to go swimming at one of the hotels in Mbale.

JUNE: Our nursery teacher, Sylvia, got married and some of our children performed at the reception. They were definitely a hit among the guests. Also, a few children escorted an American team to a local babies’ orphanage where they were able to play with these little ones.

JULY: Many of our friends from America come to visit us during the summer. We love spending time with our sponsors and meeting new friends. Thank you for coming and loving on us!!!

AUGUST: The second term of school closed at the end of this month, so we were busy preparing for examinations. LCH also was selected by a local bank for their “Give back to the community” campaign. We also had one of our students, Kamadi, qualify for the Mbale football team that would play in the national competition.

SEPTEMBER: Back to school again. And our friend, Betty, qualified for a surgery to help loosen some of her muscles so that she could walk a little easier. Praise God for a great success and healing. Betty is able to take steps- one foot in front of the other- for the first time in her life!!

OCTOBER: Still in school. But we had a wonderful time celebrating with our driver, Moses, at his wedding. We even had another opportunity to perform.

NOVEMBER: The day had come for the P7 students to sit for national exiting exam that determines whether they would get into secondary school. Teachers and students spent so many extra hours preparing and reviewing everything that was taught in Primary school. After the exam, we celebrated all their hard work with a wonderful day of swimming and eating. In addition, this month construction began on our new girls hostel that will be the new home for our 20 oldest girls.

DECEMBER: What a busy month! Lulwanda celebrated it’s 6th year of operation with a grand party. We also had a graduation ceremony for our nursery students who will be entering primary school. The P5 and P7 class participated in a wonderful seminar about what God says about sex and why it is good to save sex until marriage. December also brought the closing of our school year, but before we could let the students go, all of the students went on an educational tour. The older classes visited Kakira Sugar Works and Confectioners and came out more informed and hyped up on sugar . The younger classes traveled up the mountain to Sipi Falls where they played in the cave, water, and hiked to the top of the falls.

PRAISES & PRAYERS

* Praise the Lord: The results from the P7 national examination are in and our students did exceptionally well. They are all enrolled in a secondary boarding school and eagerly await for their first day.

* Praise the Lord: The new girls hostel is almost complete (photo taken in December)- meaning that in the next month we will be moving our oldest girls into the hostel, therefore making room for TWENTY new little girls to join the family of Lulwanda.

Please pray or God’s perfect selection of the orphans in the greatest need (only God knows) and for their transition into the home and our current children’s adjustment to having new siblings.

* PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS are set to be held on Feb. 18. Please pray peace over the nation of Uganda and that there would be a fair election. Pray for peace and acceptance for whatever the outcome of the election may be.

Considering I was only in Uganda for 10 days of December, things were fast and furious. Here is a recap of what has been going on at LCH and in my life:

The SCHOOL:

Lulwanda Children’s Home Primary school finished off the school year with great success. We have a great group of teachers that are not only dedicated to teaching the basics of reading, writing, and arithmetic, but also have the heart to invest spiritually and emotionally into their lives.

There are many activities that the children look forward to during

the holiday times. Kites were a big hit.

We had a wonderful graduation ceremony for our Nursery students that are moving to Primary school next year. They were so happy to have a day that celebrated them and their hard work. We pray all success over them as they will join Teacher Rebecca’s P1 class next year.

The HOME:

Happy Birthday Lulwanda!!

That’s right. Lulwanda celebrated its 6th birthday on December 1st. We invited some important local figures, Pastor Morris, the parents of the school’s community children, and all of our staff and children to join in a day of appreciating and celebrating all that God has done in the past six years.

Visitors

One thing I really love about living in Uganda is that there are many opportunities to meet new people, share about what you are doing, and then visit their ministry or have them visit you. Of course, I take every chance I get to boast in what God is doing at Lulwanda and invite people to come see for themselves.

1. Friends from Made in the Streets: In October, I met my housemate Jennifer in Nairobi, Kenya to visit MITS, a ministry that works to get children off of the streets and trained in a skill. I had the opportunity to share the gospel with some street boys in downtown Nairobi (bottom left). For multiple reasons, life has “forced” them onto the streets, usually falling into the habit of sniffing glue or jet fuel. It was heart wrenching to see so many kids, with such potential, just wasting away on the streets. MITS has a community center downtown and for those children who show continued commitment to change their lives, they are then selected to go to the “farm” where they are taught basic literacy, math, and computer skills and are then trained in a skill (tailoring, catering, woodwork, hairdressing, or mechanics). I spent two nights at the farm and met Phiona, Laquita, and Jess. They then took me up on my offer and took the 12 hour bus journey to visit LCH and me in Mbale. We had a really fun week together.

2. Friends from Revolution Ministry: I heard of this ministry from a friend and was able to connect with three wonderful ladies who came from Kampala to teach our oldest two classes about what God says about sex before marriage. Walk Pure: Learning to save your most special possession for the right person. I am so grateful that the Lord opened this door for the kids to be taught the truth about sex and how God views it, especially since it seems to be an avoided topic in this culture. Although beginning shy, by the end of the 3 day seminar, the kids did not want these ladies to go. Naster and Sylvia even called me aside and asked if I could call their boss to request them to stay for another week. Ha. I know that our children also captured the hearts of these ladies. They had nothing but praises to give back for what is happening with and in our kids. In a world that seems to push the idea that sex is “cool” my prayer is that the information that they learned and the value God places on purity would influence their lives and their decisions as they continue on to secondary school. Please pray with me.

3. The P7’s visit their village: All of our P7 graduates had an opportunity to visit the village where they came from. Many of the children have not been back since they first came to LCH, so I can only imagine how surprised their family members and neighbors were to see how healthy and hope-filled they are. It was fun to hear stories of who they got to see, how they helped fetch water or work in the garden, and how they felt about life in the village. Despite the nice visit, all of the P7’s still concluded that life in the village is very hard and they are so glad that God has brought them to LCH where they have many more opportunities.

Other things at LCH:

The new girls hostel is well on its way. I can’t wait to see it finished when I return. And, I am even more excited because as 20 of the older girls move into the new building, that leaves room for 20 new girls to come and ultimately, 20 more lives to be changed for the glory of the Lord. God is so good!!

There is always time for fun at LCH.

I really don’t know why this chicken is pink. We received it as a gift and after asking 3 boys, they all promised me that it

born pink and not painted. I still think they might be pulling my leg.

One afternoon I was making bread with some of the girls while the other children were playing outside. I started hearing shouts, “Wamusota! Wamusota! Wamusota!” The girls then said, “There is a snake outside!” At this point, I heard stones hitting against the side of our metal building. Walking outside and approaching the corner, I saw a big snake slither into the main hall. At this point, the uncles (who were retrieving hoes and machetes) arrived and killed the snake. Sick! I hate snakes! We went back to our baking but about 5 minutes later I hear shouts again and the girls said, “Teacha, there is another snake.” What?!?! Sure enough, in the same spot, Enock killed another big snake that looked like his friend. We decided that we should pray against the schemes of the enemy and thank the Lord for his protection. Please continue to pray that God’s hedge of protection would be within the fence of the LCH property and that nothing meant to harm any of us would. The thief comes to steal, to kill, and to destroy, but Jesus came to give life in the fullest!!

CHRISTMAS-TIME IN UGANDA

Tis’ the season to be jolly. Whether in America or Uganda, there are certain touches that can help put you in the holiday spirit. I feel like this is especially important in Uganda, seeing as the weather in December is quite the opposite of cold. Actually, December and January are the hottest and dustiest months in Uganda (reaching up to the 90s- when we usually live in the mid 70s).

We also had an expat Christmas pageant, complete with carols, special music, and the children acting out the story of Jesus’ birth.

I left Uganda saying, “Merry Christmas and Happy New Year”. As I told the church before I left, “I feel blessed to have two homes. I am leaving home (Uganda) to go home (Texas). Yet while I am at one home I always miss the other home. That just gives me a bigger push to pray.” So, I love you Uganda. I will miss you greatly. And I promise to be a voice to boast in all the God is doing in you!

I will be in America (mostly Texas) until the beginning of March to enjoy a chilly Christmas, to spend quality time with family and friends, to speak to groups and churches as an advocate for LCH, and to do personal fundraising to allow me to continue my mission in Uganda. Thank you for continuing to follow me in this journey and may God bless you for all the prayers you have lifted up on my (and my kids’) behalf.

Up Up and Away!

It is almost hard to believe, but TODAY I am flying out of Uganda and headed back to Texas (Depart 00:40 on Dec. 10 Uganda time= 3:40pm Dec 9 Texas time). In preparing to come "home", I would like you to pray with me over some specific things:

- that my big toe would heal properly (without infection) . (I kicked a ball and then was bleeding. Not sure really what happened.)
- that the Lord would ready my heart for the transition back to Western culture
- safe journeys as I travel to the airport and for flights to go smoothly
- fruitful and fun time with my family
- opportunities to share with new groups/people about what God is doing at LCH (If you have a small group, etc. that would be interested, please let me know)
- wisdom in what tactics to use for my personal fundrasing
- refreshment and change in my heart (specifically I am praying Psalm 139:23-24) and that my soul would be satisfied more and more in God's love for me

Thank you for praying. I hope that I will get to see many of you when I am home. I am planning to visit Houston area, Midland, New Braunfels, and Dallas area. And then I will see where God leads me :)

Like kids in a candy shop...

The first thing to know in doing anything in Uganda is that they really value formal “letterhead” requisitions. Everything seems like it must be so official and follow protocol. This would be ok if the follow-through was just as thorough. But 9 times out of 10 you can expect for the unexpected. That is what makes field trips such an adventure. You really never know what to expect.

But, despite the odds, some teachers and I took the older students of Lulwanda Children’s Home Primary School on an educational tour to Jinja (about 2 hours away). To my surprise it was wonderful! We started at Kakira Sugar Works. Our group divided into two and the P7 students went to the factory where they process sugarcane into sugar granules while the other students toured the Confectioner’s Factory, where they make sweets.

I had no idea the process it takes to get our sugar. Wow. As we entered the grounds of the sugar factory we first received our fancy green hard-hats, in case of flying sugar cane or abrupt “sugar storms”.

As we entered, all senses were taken over, from the sights of the massive machines, to the overbearing grinding sound, to the sweet smell of molasses. We walked from one machine to the next, feeling the steam from the 3^rd step of dampening the sugar cane, preparing it to be ground for its juice.

After the cane is ground, it must be purified through three processes: being washed with limestone milk, evaporation of the excess water, and then a sulfur smoking.

After this, the granules end up in another machine where they are steamed to remove the molasses that coats them and them emptied onto a conveyor belt to day and be packaged.

But if you ask the P7 what the best part of the tour was, they would all agree that it was at the packing station. Imagine: A silver bowl. A heaping mound of sugar. And permission to eat as much as they want. The only rule: not even a granule can leave on your hands or in your pockets as you walk out of the factory.

Meanwhile, the other students were touring the Confectioner’s Factory.

They saw the boiling vats, the“secret recipe” of making lollipops, and the machines that then shape the sticky sweet into the proper candy or lollipop shape.

The saying has never been truer, “They were like kids in a candy shop.” Only instead of paying for sweets, they only had to answer a question correctly and open their pockets. They left the factory so excited to eat and share the great treasures they had earned.

After spoiling our appetites with too many sweets, we headed into Jinja town for a simple lunch and then to the Tip Top Bakery. As we approached the mixing station, many of the children’s eyes started growing bigger seeing that three of them could fit into a single bowl that they used to mix the bread dough. They also were eager for the following days’ practical lesson of making bread like they had seen in the factory.

We ended the trip with a brief stop as Masesse Port, a small fishing village and port and then headed back to Mbale.

THEY ARE FINISHED!! Thanks for all of your prayers.

We also held a special prayer session to give words of encouragement and advice AND to lift them up before the Giver of all knowledge, wisdom, and remembrance.

They set off early each morning to walk to a neighboring school that has a "UNEB" number. We are praying that next year our school will be officially registered. After two days of two exams each, they have completed their primary school education.

Of course kids have to eat, so Betty and I brought them food, which allowed for a much needed brain rest :)

They also had some time to laugh and be silly.

And all great accomplishments are worthy to be celebrated. After doing a simple survey as to what they would like to do during their extended holiday, swimming won, hands down.

We were blessed to have Mr. Rob and Auntie Cathy (the GICF president and his wife) in Mbale to celebrate with us.

And no African celebration is complete without a meal.

Then we did some more swimming!

All in all we had a blast and are looking forward to "out of the ordinary" activities during this long holiday. Result will be announced in January some time. Again, thanks for praying!

PRAYER REQUEST:
This is our Primary 7 class. They are our oldest students and the first class to pass through our school. There is a major national exam called the PLE that these students will take on November 2-3. This exam covers everything they have learned in primary school AND their marks (scores) determine if and which secondary school they will be able to attend. Please pray for them as they continue to review for the next 1.5 weeks. And pray that their confidence is in the Lord, as they feel a lot of pressure to perform well and represent our school. God is great to have brought them this far!!!

Lulwanda Children's Home Primary School is always an active place. There is not a day that passes that you don't here the beat of a drum and songs echoing through the windows. I know the children have fun while learning.

I also am often impressed by the teacher's creativity. Though there is not even the option to run to Walmart to buy a supply or teaching aide for a lesson, our teachers do a great job at improvising.

I have to apologize for not being more faithful at updating. It is unbelievable sometimes how fast time goes. I feel like I have had "write blog" on my to-do list for the past month, but as I am there at work, other things come up. Life happens. Relationships are there. Trouble-shooting is needed. Or simple drumming parties break forth with the nursery children in the office. So, I am living in the moment and trying to be spontaneous in the Spirit when I feel his leading. That is a good thing and so I know you will accept my apologies and understand.

In September, I had my first OFFICIAL photography job. Our driver, Moses, "made" his wedding last month and asked me to be the main photographer. I had so much fun but it was serious work. Here is just the smallest sample of the 1300 photos I took that day.

First, there are only 3 weeks remaining until our P7 students sit for their BIG exam. This exam determines whether they are accepted to continue education onto Secondary school. It also will determine WHICH secondary school they will be able to go to. Please pray that their minds would continue to absorb the information and retain all that they have learned. They have worked so so hard, going to school early and coming home late. Even attending class on Saturdays for revision. Our teachers have also worked very hard. Exams are set to start Nov. 3 or 4th.

I escorted some of the children to the National Book Week Festival in Mbale. Our children were able to participate for 2 days. The last day, they had the opportunity of writing and then presenting poems and papers about how books enrich our lives. LCH received second place in this competition and the children had a lot of fun.

I also have made time to have fun with the children, especially the younger ones. It doesn't matter what I am doing, they are always interested to look over my shoulder and learn from my actions.

And normal activities are carrying on, such as daily clothes washing, which can be a mighty job considering that there are 90 children. But I also took this picture to show that the stones are starting to be delivered in preparation to begin the new girls hostel. This will be a huge blessing and allow our older girls to move out of the "public" space of the dormitory AND it will open more room for new children to come into Lulwanda.

I will admit, this photo doesn't have that much significance, but I was excited to see a little frog on the window of my car one evening. (Truthfully, this photo is for you, Jean, because i know how much you love frogs :) )

When not at LCH, I like to spend time with my friends. And since having a car, my network of "after 7pm when it gets dark" friends has doubled because my household is now able to go over to the other "single girl" house in Mbale. We often find ourselves playing games, taking tea, and eating somethings yummy.
So these are some of my friends who have blessed my life here. I am so grateful for them.

And this is Pastor Morris and Mama Aidah, my Ugandan parents. I haven't posted a picture of them in a long time, so I thought you might like to see their bright faces.

And in September, a visiting team invited me to come with them to Murchison Falls National Park. It was such a wonderful surprise and blessing, as we stayed in the nicest hotel in the park and all of it was paid for already. (Thanks again Holy Apostle Church!!) It was a brief but relaxing (and exciting) couple of days. We even got to do safari from the sunroof of a landcruiser. It was awesome!

The coolest thing we saw was when a herd of elephants, with their 2 babies, crossed the road in front of us and then started circling their babies and "growling" at us. Yes, it was a growl, not a trumpet. The medium one was waving his ears while the big one stood tall and bravely. I will admit, we were a bit nervous because we were so close and we knew they were in defense mode to protect their babies. But the driver was ready on the gas just in case they decided to stampede.

And that is a summary of my September. Thank you for all your prayers and support.

PS- Last blog I mentioned Betty, who had surgery on her leg. Well, the cast is off and she is moving around with a brace. The leg is straighter, but we are still believing God for a miracle that she will be able to walk without a limp and even to be able to put one foot in front of the other (rather than her current "step-together" process). Again, our God is a mighty God who is able to do anything.

The game that is sweeping the girls of LCH.... Naketti (no literal translation to English, sorry)

All holiday you could find different groups of girls playing this game. It is a bit like monkey in the middle, but the "monkey" is collecting sticks from the ground to. Ten sticks equals one bundle. Once you are hit by the ball, you are "off". They also have found a way to play this as teams and the LOVE it!

Last week I was in the main hall when one of the kids came to me to tell me that Ambrose (another child) was calling me to see the pregnant pig. This was not uncommon, because Ambrose I usually the one to inform and show me whenever there is a new baby animal at LCH. When I reached the pig pen, Ambrose said very proudly, "Teacha, you are most welcome to my farm." He proceeded to tell me that he was moving stones to create the base for the floor for another room in the pig pen to put the piglets that are soon arriving. After struggling with his wheelbarrow, he removed his 5 stones of that trip and was off again. Of all the kids, Ambrose loves the animals the most. There was another day that I found some cows eating the peel remains of the kasava. Since they were so close to the outside kitchen, I tried to chase them away by using the legs of a chair I had picked up. This was only a momentary success, because as I finished chasing one cow and went for the next, the first cow would just come back. Then Ambrose was called to come help. As he arrived, he simply said go and moved his hands in a shooing motion and the cows left with no problem. So, this is my friend, Ambrose... the friend to the animals at LCH.

One of our sweet girls, Betty, has been struggling to walk properly, due to a disability. BUT God opened the opportunity for her to be one of four children from the Mbale area to have an operation by surgeons in Kenya. We are praying for the Lord's miraculous hand upon her and that she will be able to walk properly once the cast is off. Please pray with us.

A few funny stories:

I taught some of the children the game Capture the flag. They loved it!! I think they enjoyed putting their friends in jail most :) Though, I often saw opposite team members chasing their friends from their side onto the opponents side and still trying to put their friend in jail. But most of the children understood the concept. We moved our game down to the field, which is near one of our Aunties houses. As some kids got tired from running, they were interacting with Auntie Florence's kids. As we were finishing the game, someone called my name. Our conversation went something like this...

child: "Teacha, come see the puppies."
me: "Wow, puppies. How many?"
child: "There are six puppies of the cat."
me: "Puppies of the cat?"
child: "Yes, puppies of the cat!"
me: "Ok?!?"

Needless to say, I wasn't sure what baby animals that I was about to see. When the kids led me to the room, I saw 6 little gray kittens nursing. So sweet. If only my housemate wasn't allergic I would have kept one of the "puppies of the cat" :)

Last week some younger children were looking through the wedding photos I recently took for our driver, Moses' wedding. I was busy with my own work while I put someone in charge of pressing the button to move through the photos with their friends. After about 10 minutes of looking, I hear most of the children make a sort of slurping noise. I didn't mind at first, but then they did it again, so I looked at what they were looking at. It was a picture of the wedding cakes. Ha. Each time they would see a cake they would make a slurping noise and whisper, "Mmm, cake".

I love these kids so much. They continue to surprise me and make make me smile. May the Lord continue to grow them up into the men and women He will use to change the face of Uganda.

"Cultural Moments"

There are still moments, despite the 3 years I have spent in Africa, that I am still caught off guard by the sheer difference in culture or reality (in comparison to how I have grown up knowing life). For those who have been here awhile and “ culture shock” has ideally warn off, we call these times of realization, “cultural moments”. Really, I think they are one in the same. And if I am honest with myself, I pray that I will never grow immune to these “cultural moments”. I don’t want things to be too normal or unmoving because then I am less likely to be seeing the hand of God.

I had one of these moments last week. I was visiting a friend from church at her home for the first time. (Side note- my car is SUCH a blessing and allowing me the freedom of mobility to do things that I have been wanting to but not easily able to because of transport). Anyways, I had called my friend, Agie, because she had been telling me that she wanted some time to meet with me and speak about something. As I drove up to our meeting location, I fully expected to pick her up and take her out for a soda while we talked. But, as I have notice many times being here, people want me to see where they stay. So, I parked my car at the petro station and we proceeded though a group of houses, past the grazing chickens, beyond the boys practicing their dance moves, and into another section of housing that was squared off into a courtyard setting. I shook hands with 5 dusty little kids shouting, “Mzungu! Mzungu! Mzungu! How are you?” and ducked under some sheets hanging on the clothes line to dry. Then we had reached Agie’s home. She welcomed me and I entered in behind her, removing my shoes at the door. She dusted off a wooden stool for me to sit on, as she sat of a yellow piece of furry fabric below me.

With one hand out and the other hand touching the extended hand’s forearm, she shook my hand and said, “You are most welcome. Thank you for coming to visit me in my home.”

As we sat discussing the day and moved into deeper topics, I began to have my “cultural moment”. There I was, on the ONLY proper “seat” in the “house”, talking with this woman about a business venture to sell bags of charcoal. There I was, graciously welcomed into her home that was a single room, not more than 15ft by 15ft. Actually, the house had 2 “rooms”- the bedroom and the sitting room/kitchen area/play room- partitioned by a sheet hanging over a string. I was humbled. Lord, who am I that you would choose me to be in such a place and have the blessing of visiting this friend?

It was once her 4 children came in and greeted me one by one- the girls kneeling down and shaking my hand in respect, that I thought to myself, “So, where do the kids sleep? Surely not on the twin bed in the “bedroom”.” I then noticed the stained mattress leaning against the wall of the “sitting room”, ready to be put down that night for all 4 kids to sleep on.

Again, Lord who am I that I have anything of spiritual worth to encourage this sister of mine. She could teach me so much about contentment and God’s provision and how to live out the verse, “Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow has enough worries of its own.” My friend Agie lives moment by moment with the Lord. He is the one who sustains her. He is the one who protects her and her kids. He is the one whose thoughts towards her are precious and more numerous than the grains of sand in the sea.

I will admit it was a bit overwhelming. To understand that God is near, in such material poverty, because my Ugandan brothers and sisters are rich in experiences that cause them to trust that the Lord is their Shepherd, they shall not want. I am grateful for these “cultural moments” because they open my eyes to the heart of the Father.

I feel like the month has flown by already. Wow.

When I first arrived, two of my dear college friends were already at LCH with a team. Stephanie and Connie (along with our clinical officer) conducted hearing screenings for all of our children and staff. They also were able to move out of the hotel and into my house for the remainder of their trip. It was SO wonderful to have them with me. Although most of our time was at LCH, we were also able to visit the village where one of Stephanie's friends lives and travel to Sissyi Falls to trek up to the very top.

The children finished Term 2 on Aug. 13th. This whole year, our P7 class has been busy preparing to take the national examinations held in November. They sat with other children from the sub-county and took mock-examinations. In District Mocks, six of our students ranked in Division II (the second highest). Overall, Anthony Wanzala came on top with the most points at LCH in both mock-examinations. Please continue praying for our students as they bear the pressure of this test (determining if and which secondary school they can go to).

God is good in Uganda

I truly had a wonderful, restful, fun, and refreshing trip to the USA- mainly Austin, Texas. Seeing as time was short, I didn't travel more than an hour outside of Austin, which made for plenty of time with family and near-by friends. I will post pictures later about my adventure in Greece (before I arrived in the USA) and around Austin.

But, I wanted everyone to know that I have now been in Mbale for over a week. I was really glad and eager to come back. I don't know if you should expect reverse culture-shock when you go back to America, but I know last time I came back, I was just memorized by all the options of things that you can get here and how easily accessible things are. So, i guess I expected sort-of the same feelings for this trip home. That was not the case though. It His own gentle and loving ways I feel like God spoke to my heart and said, "See, you are not missing out on anything in Texas. The reality that you thought was, is not really reality. So, you are free to fully embrace Uganda." Not that I wasn't embracing it, but I think like anyone would when living oversees and having left all family and friends behind, you just wonder if you are missing out on everyone you love's lives. So, I was glad for this lesson- that I can fully embrace Uganda- and am eager to see what more God will show me in this direction.

Now, I imagine that this might lead you to think the most frequent question I was asked when I was home... "So, how long do you think you will be in Africa?" And my answer... I don't know. As long as God has me here. My heart is willing to stay however long, but I am also not opposed to go back to America. I just want to be where He wants me. That is the safest and most peaceful place to be.

Otherwise, I found the kids getting ready for holidays (they break for a month holiday on Friday). I have slowly been getting stories and updates on what has been happening. It is surprising how much you can miss in one month. Unfortunately I do not have photos, but here is a brief update of LCH for July:

- The school participated in Music Competition again, where they sang and danced to traditional songs, original composition, and sight read a western piece. They sang wonderfully and got 3rd place out of 9 schools. This is a huge jump from last year (as they were 7th), so we pray that God would enable us to be #1 next year.

- Kids also went for football and netball competition at the subcounty level. A good number of our students were selected for the county level: Emma O, Ivan K, Kamadi, Namakoye Brenda, Sarah Khainsa, and Aida. In the end, the boys were all chosen to represent Mbale District at Nationals in Arua (northern Uganda). But due to the necessity to take mock-examinations for the exit level exams, Emma and Ivan stayed behind. Kamadi will leave on Saturday with Teacher Nathan to play football for the Mbale team. Please pray for their travels and time there.

- Thanks to a team that just came, all the students and staff have now had their hear tested.

- And as I said before, Term 2 is ending this week and the kids are eager for holidays to begin.

AND..... SEE WHAT GOD HAS DONE!!!!

God is so good. I am almost without words to
express how humbled and overjoyed I am at the
Lord's provision. Wow. There are many awesome testimonies to how God provided. But the one I want to boast in how He has shown me a new aspect of Himself as a Father. We all have needs and wants. I won't say that the car was a
need. Rather I will say it was it was a practical, useful, and would be VERY helpful want. And I have seen that the Lord does not just come through for the big things, when we are desperate. But He loves me specifically and generously and desired to give me this blessing, just as my earthly father would have seen my practical want and helped me. I don't feel like my words adequately expressed what I am trying to say, but I will leave it at that. Hopefully you get the gist.

YES!! Praise the Lord! I picked up my new car Monday and was able to drive it to LCH yesterday!!! It was so fun to arrive and see the joy and excitement of everyone. They danced and shouted and jumped and hugged. It was awesome. It really showed me what rejoicing with those who rejoice means.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for praying God's provision with me AND for responding to my special project. Again, I am humbled and overjoyed. Thank you.

Special Project

To my friends, ministry partners, and blog followers,

I greet you in the name of Jesus Christ, our Savior. What a wonderful God we serve! It is almost beyond my comprehension that I have lived in Uganda for close to three years. How faithful He has been.

I have seen the hand of God over and over in the lives of the children and staff at Lulwanda Children’s Home and in my own life. I count it an honor and privilege to have been deemed of use in the work God is doing in Mbale, Uganda.

As many of you know, for the past two years I have been serving at Lulwanda Children’s Home Primary School as the phonics teacher.

I have seen great fruits from my labor; students in the upper classes are now able to sound out and read any word they come across, even if it was not a rote memory word from their earlier years of study.

I am also pleased to let you know about a new opportunity to switch from teaching phonics to taking on new responsibilities. I have accepted the position of Program Coordinator for LCH. I will be playing a more active role in collaborating and organizing different programs for the school, home, and clinic. In addition, I will take on a larger role of hosting visitors and keeping sponsors connected. I am very excited to see what God has planned for me in this new position.

In light of this new position and a deepening commitment to call Uganda home, I now have a need for my own car. I am inviting you to be a part of this special fundraising project. In order to get a trustworthy and durable car, I am aiming to raise $13,000.

As many of you experience everyday, a car would allow me the freedom of mobility. I would use it to travel the 25 minutes to work, to run work-related and personal errands, to travel to church and other ministry activities, and it would make evening-time discipleship and fellowship possible with other households in the missionary community. In addition, my own car would decrease/eliminate my dependency on the transportation of others, of the overcrowded van, and of public means, therefore allowing me a more reliable, safe, and time-conscious means of transport.

St. Kizito's baby home

First off, how can you resist a face like this??
Simple answer... you can't. Everyone loves a baby- from child to grandparent, there is just something about babies that take us all captive. I recently had the opportunity to escort a team and some of our LCH kids to St. Kizito's Baby Home. I have written about it before, but as a recap: This home is under the Catholic church and is run by some wonderful sisters and staff members who take in abandoned babies or those whose parents are in extreme poverty and cannot manage to care for the baby. There are currently around 50 babies, ages newborn to 4 years old living at St. Kizito. Truely, God's hand is upon these children because without the care receive here, they would likely not make it through their first days or weeks of life.

One of the first children we met at the home was wearing a shirt that our LCH kids had donated to the home. They were surprised and happy to see that although they too are orphans, they were making a difference in other orphans' lives.

We pray that the Lord would continue to strengthen these babies and the workers who tirelessly effort to give them more than they would have in "the real world". We also pray that as the babies are in the home, their parents (if they are there) would be wise and responsible with their money that they may become financially stable and ready to recieve their child back into the home once they reach the age of four.

Jesus loves the little children. All the children of the world. Red and yellow, black and white. They are precious in his sight. Jesus loves the little children of the world.

No need to fear, but sharing so that you can be praying for me. I am sick with Malaria. I didn't feel normal yesterday, got tested, but the test came negative. So, i went home, but over the night I had awful body fatigue and chills. Today, my sweet roommate stopped at the pharmacy to bring me some medicine before church. Better safe than sorry. So, I believe (in Jesus' name) that I am on the road to recovery. It just isn't fun to feel this way. Again, NO NEED TO WORRY. I am being treated and in good hands. Though malaria seems scary from an American perspective, it is VERY common here. Just pray for quick and full recovery.

But it has given me a new perspective and sensitivity to the hundred or thousands that live in the village and are too far from a clinic to get tested or treatment. Lord, have mercy on these people. You alone are the doctor of all doctors and can heal with or without medicine.

On a VERY DIFFERNT NOTE--- but while I am thinking of it...

Please be collecting old (or new) bathing suits for our kids. Specifically, the size for 9-14 year olds. I have enjoyed taking the older kids swimming, and they look forward to it. BUT the hotel has a "strict policy" that the kids must have proper swimming "costumes". I don't know how long I will be able to ride on their grace for the kids to swim in tshirts and shorts. So, as you are wondering what to do with last years suit, think of LCH.

I appreciate what a friend said once to me when I felt like I was too busy to keep up with blogs and emails. She said that meant that I was fully living and experiencing Uganda. This is true. With what you might ask?? Well here are a few things:

SCHOOL:
We are in the second week of Term 2 of the school year, so my days are busy preparing lessons and teaching the children, as well as the other random tasks that occur within the day at LCH.

I look forward to the children's break and lunch time because I am able to more freely talk with them to see how their day is going and what they have been learning. It is wonderful to get so many, "Good morning, Teacha." and little hugs.

INTRODUCTIONS and WEDDINGS:
I recently got to be part of a wonderful weekend for both of my friends, Sylvia and Eriyakim. Sylvia is a coworker and fellow youth leader with me. It was a wonderful wedding- the most fun I have been to yet in Uganda.

They introduced on Friday and got married on a Saturday (which is very unique). It was an extremely busy and tiresome weekend, but so much fun to get to rejoice with them.

I was asked to be one of the "fake brides" in the introduction and also to be a "sister" that accompanies her out. To be honest, I was more than excited. I have always wanted to be a fake bride in an introduction and this was the best one I could have been in because there were so many of my friends, coworkers, and fellow church members there. It was also very interesting to observe an introduction from the "insiders" perspective, instead of just an invited guest.

OTHER HAPPENINGS:

Baking:

Seeing as can goods or packages are not readily available here, I have been trying out different recipes to find the best ones. I got a brownie recipe from a British friend that had raved reviews from her housemates. After attempting but failing the first time, I decided to go to her house and watch her make them- with the intention of eyeballing the measurements because her recipe came in grams and ounces. The result of her brownies-- delicious. So, I went home and tried again. Still a failure. Maybe I just need to make sure the measurements are correct? So, I borrowed their scale and weighed out all the ingredients and then transferred them into the cups that we use. Result: failure again. Well maybe we are at a higher altitude and I need more flour? Or maybe my baking powder is old? Or maybe the oven isn't really the temperature that the thermometer is reading? So, I checked or corrected these things and tried the brownies again. Result: failure #4. On Monday I borrow a pan that looked more the size of pan my friend used, and I tried again. This time I thought to myself, "They say that insanity is when you try the same thing over and over again- expecting a different result." But I was hopeful that maybe this time my brownies would turn out. Result: failure #5. What the heck? I would have given up long ago that this recipe was bogus, but I tasted them and they were nice. So why can't I make brownies??? Well, I tried for the last time tonight- changing one simple thing. Result: wonderful!!

Lesson of the brownie experience:

DRINKING CHOCOLATE does not equal COCOA

Staying Healthy:

Praise the Lord that I have not had malaria since I have been here. It is only by His protection (literally because I stopped taking preventatives at the beginning of the year). But I was in the clinic the other day when some of the kids were getting their treatments. Derrick had come in because he was not feeling well. Nurse Gertrude gave him a seemingly peculiar malaria test. Curious as to how the test worked (and with the kids prodding, "Teacha, you should try and test," not thinking that I would- or maybe that mzungus would be tested the same way), I was tested for malaria. I asked the nurse if the test could show positive even when someone is feeling bad and she responded that it was possible.

So, we waited for my result... one line... negative! Derrick was also negative for malaria.

Road trip:

I took a road trip to Jinja for the weekend with some friends. My main purpose was to participate in the Source of the Nile Marathon. The race also had a 10 kilometer option, so I went for that. My second agenda was to get away from Mbale and have some good food. It is funny how food can be a motivating factor when familiar home tastes can be rare.

I finished the 10K in right under an hour. To be honest, I surprised myself. This was much faster than I expected. It was a nice race, going through the neighborhoods and downtown Jinja. I have always loved races. There is something about them that connect deeply in my spirit as I compare the physical race to the spiritual race I am in as a believer in Jesus Christ: pressing on toward the goal, sometimes running alongside others and sometimes alone, being encouraged when you feel weary and getting to return the encouragement to others, and the great cheers at the end of the race that pull you in to finish strong and well. Then as you pass through the line, there are so many there- who have gone through the same race- to celebrate your finish with you. It is just so great.

At the end of this physical race, Lissa and Glenn were there to celebrate with me.

We also stopped at this neat weaving factory. They have huge machine that they use to make beautiful wraps, hammocks, purses, bed covers, and many other things.

IN OTHER NEWS:
I am blessed to be able to have a brief holiday out of Uganda to go visit my best friend, Jacquline, who lives in Greece. Even better is that the Lord worked out the timing that our 3rd best friend, Erin, will be ending a mission trip in Mongolia and will meet us there. I can't believe I get to be there with both of them at the same time!! What a great gift from my Father in Heaven (the giver of EVERY good and perfect gift)!!

I will then continue my journey onto Austin, Texas to spend some much needed time with my family. It has been a year and a half since I last saw them and I just can't wait to be home!!

Please pray for journey mercies, safe travel, and no flight complications. Also pray for a rich and refreshing time with friends and family.

I leave Mbale on June 21 and return Aug. 1. So, my next post will likely be of the beautiful island of Lesvos, Greece and of my smiling face with my family at the lake. God is so good!!

Thank you again for your faithful prayers. I have always loved the line in the Ginny Owens song, "I'm not who I was when I took my first step. And I'm clinging to the promise Your not through with me yet." God has been teaching me, keeping me, and refining me. All glory to His name!!

Another holiday adventure!!

So, I almost forgot to share about the fun housemate weekend we had at Sesse Island. After traveling 4 hours by bus and one hour by car, we reached Entebbe to start searching for the ferry dock. As we would stop along the way the locals would say, "Oh you better hurry. They will leave you." Truly, this is the only place in Uganda that I have found does not follow African time. We reached the dock in time to literally run onto the boat. A good start to our fun adventures.

I don't know how it happened (other than God saving us some seats) but we made our way through the ferry crowd to find a bench completely empty and perfect to accommodate the 3 of us and our stuff. We were off for the third leg of our travel adventures: 3 hours on the ferry in the middle of Lake Victoria.

When we arrived on the island we were welcomed and I found the sign with my name (kind of) on it.

We were able to enjoy the beautiful sunset and a short walk down the beach after we arrived. (Emily, Jennifer, Me)

The next morning we went on a "nature hike" around the island. Although not exactly what I was expecting, it turned out to be a wonderful time. We walked through the local fishing village and saw many men preparing their boats and their hooks to go out for the evening catch. There are actually quite a few islands that compose Sesse Islands. I learned that it is rare to find development on any of the islands beyond about 2 km from the water. Most island are composed of fishing villages and power is not available there. The people on the island are a cash based people and depend highly on food sources from the outside that is brought in on the ferries.

As usually, our white skin drew the attention of many village children. The guide was wonderful with the kids and drew a game in the sand to keep them occupied so we could make our getaway without a parade of small people following us.

I did learn that the culture on the islands do not highly value education. It is rare to find a school on the islands, so most children grow up to take over the family fishing business.

Our nature hike did actually lead us through a rainforest. This was the most amusing part of the journey, seeing as we were with 6 Ugandans. Most had never been in the forest and I have concluded that most Ugandans are extremely afraid of caterpillars. Seeing as we were in the rainforest, there were tons of little black caterpillars crawling all over the place. Squeals, jumping, shouts, crazy arms running through their hair in fear that one fell on them, and lots of, "Please!! Let's just get out of here quickly. No! Don't stop again. Let's just go!" It made the journey quite amusing.

At the end of the rainforest walk, we ended up at the top of the island's peak and were able to view the other nearby islands. It was beautiful.

After the walk, we spent the day relaxing in the sun, swimming, and playing cards. That night, there was a huge bar-b-que and bonfire. I can't tell you how delicious that dinner was (grilling is very rare in Mbale and I live with a vegetarian). Mmm. It was good. After dinner, we had a dance party around the fire with the new friends we had made at our hotel.

Early Sunday morning we loaded onto the ferry again (this time we didn't have to run) and headed back on our long journey to Mbale. Sesse Island was very peaceful and a great time with Emily and Jennifer. I only wish we could have stayed longer.

So, I cannot properly see my photos to be able to make comments of what is happening. Brief overview: This is the last week of holidays for the kids (and me). I have really enjoyed this break and made the most of my time. Finally having some time to catch up on my reading, I have finished the first 2 books of the Chronicles of Narnia series and thoroughly enjoyed my morning coffee and time in the Word going through 1 Thes. Thanks to a wonderful care package (from my old housemate Brooklyn), me and my housemates made tie dye shirts together. It was really such a fun day. I couldn't wait to see the final outcomes at the end of the day. And, the last group of picture are from when I took the P5 and the hard workers at the Home swimming at Mt. Elgon Hotel. It was so much fun. The kids were quite brave this time- allowing Jarod and I to hold them in the middle of the pool while they tried putting their face and holding their breath under water. We had a wonderful day. And while we were there, another group of kids came (who are part of another ministry here in Mbale) and David Lucky looked over and said to me, "Look! There's my sister, Gift!" What a fun reunion.

End of Term 1 outting

As you know, the first term of the school year is over. A few of us have been very busy with the kids doing crafts, music, and dances. Last week me and some of the teachers took the best performers of each class to Sipi Falls. Sipi Falls

Sipi Falls is located near Kapchorwa town (spelling?), about an hour away from Mbale. It is up in the mountains and know for 3 beautiful waterfalls. We started our day with a short hike to the base of the first falls.
I love seeing the reactions of the children when we take them new places. For many, this might be their first exposure to different situations... whether driving round and round to get up a mountain, to crossing a little bridge over a river, to being up close to a waterfall and seeing its force.

I saw my first camellion. Our guide spotted it and pulled down the small tree so I could get a better look (so maybe the kids are not the only ones having "first times").
I love this photo of Joseph. I did nothing to change it and I feel like I perfectly capture his discovery of the fresh, cool, droplets.

Behind the first falls was a small cave that the children got to enter. It was very fun to hear their comments as the lessons from their textbooks came to life.

After the base of the waterfall, the guides led us to the top of the falls. It was a bit of a slippery hike, seeing as the rains have started again.

Another bridge. They get more and more rustic as we get further up the mountain.
We made it to the top. Now time for some exploring.
"Teacha, is that a cow? I don't think it is, but what is it?"

The kids had set out that day with high hopes of adventure and swimming. Though the water was too high at the natural pool to swim, we had lots of laughs sliding (literally at points) down the mountain to go back to the van. Where we parked there was a little water divert that was not moving too fast. This would do for the beginning of their water adventures.
